You can take off the really grotty leaves from the bottom if you like, but it's not essential for the plant's health. Be careful not to damage the growing points.

Mine look just as bad. I tidy off the worst bits ( that is the brown dead looking leaves) with secateurs. I find the new growth seems to hide the rest.
