Portuguese Laurel trimming

Hi, 
I have mature hedge of Portuguese Laurel. Would really like to trim it this weekend as finding time to do it later might be a bit hard. I am worried that there are already lots of new shootings. Is removing most of them while trimming a bad idea? Thanks.

No problem cutting them anytime of year although early summer is the accepted time for a once a year haircut.

Just check for nesting birds first.
