I need to create a privacy screen against a hawthorn hedge particularly during the winter months when the hawthorn loses its foliage. I was thinking maybe a trellis with climbers has anyone any idea for the best plants to use or any other suggestions? Thank you

    You could try trellis and evergreen clematis, such as 'Freckles'.  Ivy would work too.
    A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
