Climbing Ivy

Will "Boston" and "English" ivies climb the dead trunk and branches of trees which have successfully provided me with a screen for 20 years but which now are dying.

    Yes ivy will climb it but will stick to the trunk which will get thicker and thicker.  It wont creep along the branches and eventually the dead tree will be come unstable.

    Thanks, Yviestevie.  That's extremely helpful.  I realise if the ivy doesn't creep along the branches then i won't get the degree of privacy I'm looking for.

    They do pose a bit of a risk, both safety and disease. Your best bet is to remove them really. If you keep the logs and stack them up in a corner out of the way, they will be a good nursery for beetles.

    Trouble is at 84 how long will it take to grow replacement cover?
    Lelandii are definitely out but what other quick-growing shrub can I plant?
