I live in Cumbria, literally on the beach and I would like some advice on choosing plants for containers that will tolerate strong westerly winds and sea spray.

Crambe maritima, Pancratium maritimum, Centranthus ruber and Glaucium corniculatum are all worth trying. There are also shrubs you could try if the containers are large: Rosa ‘Dunwich Rose’ and forms of Rosa rugosa grow naturally in sand dunes; rosemary and cistus live in crevices between rocks, and Lavatera maritima is another coastal dweller. But expect any shrub actually on the beach to have its shape affected by sea winds.
