Black Tulips

Hello
I am after some advice please. My sister has bought black tulip bulbs for several years from a market in Amsterdam, to grow in her back garden - we are on Sussex clay. She doesn't recall which variety, but every time she has planted them, they always come up red - not blackish red - but true red.  We are on clay soil in Sussex. Has anyone else had similar experiences, or have you got any tips please to get the black ones to come up 'blackish / purplish black'.  I was wondering if its anything to do with the soil, or if she should obtain them from a different supplier?  Any tips gratefully received. Thanks

    Definitely not a supplier mix-up?

Queen of Night is a fantastic, dark purple.
  • I have grown Queen of the Night in large containers with white varieties on several occasions. No problem with colour, a stunning combination. I always pot in multi-purpose compost, have never grown them in open soil as I like them to make a statement near the door. I have purchased my bulbs from various garden centres in Berkshire and Cornwall. It is a bit of a problem to find a pure white that flowers at exactly the same time as Q of the N.

Thank you everyone - I will get her to try those suggested varieties and try them in a tub.  Does anyone know of any reputable suppliers that would still have any of these in stock?  Its her birthday in a couple of weeks and I could get some for a present ready for autumn planting.

Peter Nyssen bulbs are excellent. You can't order until the Autumn, but maybe you could give her a "gift voucher" type card with the details and order them later  :)

  • Brilliant idea thank you!  Just ordered her a voucher from Crocus who do vouchers.
  • i moved to a house with a few of these scattered around the garden. I think they're called Black Parrot, but they are more plum in the sun with a beautiful feathered edge. I love them.
