Clematis and climbing Rose companion planting

KmehKmeh Posts: 142
Morning

Considering planting a climbing rose like iceberg with a clematis like armandii.

Any advice? Can you just pop them in the same whole or do they need their own space?

Thanks

avoid armandii growing with anything other than a very large , vigorous tree. It's a thug
    Devon.
  • You can grow climbing roses with other, less thuggish clematis--I'd recommend looking at the large-flowered ones or the viticella hybrids.

Thank you. Any alternative suggestions. Do like the idea of an evergreen clematis to give some autumn and winter coverage for the wall in question.

if you want winter interest, maybe C. freckles ?
    Devon.

It's to cover quite a large wall. So longegivity and breadth of coverage from the clematis is a priority. Also not a slow grower too. If that wish list is possible!

IMHO , you can have Armandii, or a rose, not both.

EVERGREEN Clematis: snowdrift, appleblossom, pixie, cartmanii joe, early sensation, avalanche, winter beauty, cirrhosa freckles ...

Any of these less thuggish but still have longevity of foliage and cover a decent sized wall.

    Thanks

  • OK, you could use Clematis armandii on its own for this. If you want a combination, I'd use a different rose, but still not Clematis armandii, which overwhelms everything. A combination on this scale can be tricky unless you pick a clematis that can be cut hard back when you need to prune/renew the rose. The Peter Beales website allows you to search for climbing or rambling roses by height:
    https://www.classicroses.co.uk

and the Taylors site allows you to search for clematis the same way:

  • Appleblossom is an armandii form. The others are all modestly sized, so may not work, but it would help if you can give us the wall dimensions.

8m wide by 5m height.  Have to spots where a solanum album died over winter. 5 months pregnant  so keen not to have to dig yet another hole in the gravel. So clematis and rose should not too wide. You are right of course to choose something that's not too thuggish.  3-4 m each?
