Which medium evergreen shrub for container outside back door, to make impact?

Looking for a medium size shrub (say 2.5 - 3 feet high at maturity) for a container which is 16” high.  Preferably evergreen for all year foliage, ideally something with fragrant flowers.  (don’t mind when it flowers, or the colours).  It will be in partial shade and north facing.
I’d originally thought about a Daphne Odora, but apparently they are not great for containers.  We already have two Cordylines either side of our back door, so I’m looking for something different to make an impact.
Any suggestions would be gratefully received!

Hello. The challenge is the shade! One idea: Sarcococca (evergreen, scented, flowers in the winter, likes shade). Choisya (eg White Dazzler) is lovely (evergreen, scented) but I think they need sun to really flower well. Pittosporum tobira might be OK in shade, but isn't hardy so you would have to move the pot indoors over winter.

Oh yes, it has to be Sarcococca! The usual S. confusa is a little bit plain when not in flower, but there are some nice forms of S. hookeriana var. digyna that are slightly more elegant.
  • Another vote for the Sarcococca! Or you could think about an evergreen fern? They like shade but would need to be kept well watered.

This is so helpful - a Sarcococca Hook Var Dig it is!  Thanks so much :-)

Just to say I have 2 daphnes growing very happily in large pots, both been doing well for 3 years. Both perfume princess, one pink and one white. It is possible.
