Elegant Large Shrub/Small Tree for Part Shade

Hi Everyone
Looking for suggestions for a large shrub or miniature tree for the next stage of out garden development.

I'm looking for something roughly on a par size wise with an olive tree - about 1.5m high and roughly 1m around, but as the site is part shade I don't think an olive will work.  A dwarf amelanchier would be up my street, but I have another elsewhere - so would like something different.  Soil is clay, but I will improve that.  Any ideas?

By far the best plants for this position are Rhododendrons and Azaleas. Just check first whether your soil is alkaline. They don't like this.
Everyone likes butterflies. Nobody likes caterpillars.
  • If you want one that will become a beautiful shape as it matures, try Aucuba japonica ‘Longifolia’. Another evergreen would be Fatsia japonica. For deciduous shrubs, Viburnum plicatum and Cornus controversa are both good. But 1m by 1.5m is not large. Most of these will get larger. For part shade, you could try a Daphne bholua, which would start out small and get larger.
