Anyone else grown Clematis Early Sensation?

in Plants
Hello,
We bought this a couple of years ago, seduced by the glossy parsley-leaf foliage and promise of masses of green-white early flowers. It delivered but then went almost completely brown looking dead. I assumed that I’d lost it but then leaves started to regrow, but very slowly and it the redeemed itself looking good by the winter and flowering again.

A friend has the same plant and it goes through a similar cycle but not quite so dismal looking during the Summer, just half- dead not fully dead looking 😳
Is this everyone’s else’s experience and is there a secret to managing to keep it looking ok during the summer rather than dreadful?
Also any recommendations for an evergreen clematis which looks reasonable all year?
Thank you
