Pyracantha Saphyr Orange die back

Planted a young plant (in berry) last year against an old fence (NW facing). Followed the suggestions & watered well. By late autumn the bottom half (branches, leaves & stem) had turned brown (but branches still green under the bark) but the top half remained OK. Doesn't fit any of the usual culprits. Any ideas please?

    I'm wondering if it's possibly pyracantha scab?

    Quite possible though the variety should be resistant. Thanks for your help

    Even though there is green at the top or inside the branches of the shrub, it does not mean it is alive. Evergreen shrubs can take a long time to show issues. Fire-blight is the my first thought. I would cut the whole shrub down to see how it responds.
