how hard to prune Hydrangea Runaway Bride

so, I've had one of these for a couple of years now. I don't think I actually pruned it at all last year. not sure why! anyway, can this be pruned hard? or is it best to go easy?

the plant is  bit straggly, but has plenty of buds and is beginning to put on leaves

thanks guys!

I think this is the one that flowers on the new growth after flowering unlike other varieties, in other words you just prune it lightly straight after flowering.
I'm pretty sure it's this one, l'm sure someone can confirm whether l'm right or not !

I have Runaway Bride and I have recently checked how to prune. Cut back the flowered stems to a strong pair of buds in early spring.  Remove any branches that are damaged or dead.  After pruning apply a mulch around the base of the plant.
