Screening Planting Ideas

I am after some ideas for screening as we have a very overlooked garden. In the gap you can see there was an ash tree, which I removed as this was far too big for the space. However, we are now left with this unsightly view from the upstairs windows.
We are looking for something not too expensive that would provide screening quite quickly. I had thought about something like a Japanese privet tree. We are in the southwest with clay soil, this part of the garden gets the sun in the mornings but is often in shade.
