small space for a tree

I have a 4' x 4' square of dirt on my concrete patio. I would like to plant a dwarf, semi dwarf or columnar tree in this spot. I am worried about root space and would like to get something that would be okay in a space that small. I assume that trees that can be grown in pots would work well? I would prefer a fruit tree of some sort. The space is full sun all day. We get a lot of rain throughout the year. Also I live at the top of a hill, so there is a lot of wind that comes through our yard. I have been looking at Stella Cherry trees.

Another cherry which might be an option is the Fuji cherry Kojo-no-mai. It's not known for producing berries but it has nice flowers early in the year and good leaf colour in autumn and it stays to a smaller size than the Stella cherry according to the RHS information pages. I found it is slow growing and even though it is described as a shrub, the one I have is a small tree. It also says on the RHS page it is OK in an exposed spot where as they recommend sheltered for the Stella cherry.

Blue Onion

Juneberry - Amelanchier. Prune it to three or five stems.  Lovely flowers, lovely fruit, and enjoyable fall color.

Cercis canadensis Forest Pansy for blooms and foliage colour, or a small crabapple tree for the blooms and fruit that feed the birds in winter. Some Euonymus and Hamamelis are small and can take the exposed site.
