Alstroemerias growing already?

BerkleyBerkley Posts: 428
I moved my ten pots of alstroemerias in to a dry, well-lit garage for the Winter - after pulling all remaining stems as advised. Now, most of them are showing signs of growth up to twelve inches in length. Should I remove these or will they flower OK if I just leave them?

Give them as much light as you can. I brought my pots in to an unheated greenhouse. They were flowering then and they still are now. The ones in the garden have died right down but they will shoot up as soon as spring arrives. They are really tough, despite looking so exotic.

Thank you, Posy. I will turn them regularly, so that they get even exposure to light from the window. So you think I should leave them as they are (not remove this early growth?). I hadn’t realised how tough they are and might overwinter them in the two grow houses I have next year.

I can't see any reason to remove the growth, Berkley. I am in the south and we don't get prolonged, harsh cold but we do have periods of ice and frozen ground. My outdoor ones come back every year. In the unheated greenhouse I reduce watering and leave them to it. Sometimes I divide them in Spring.
