Which type of Umbrella Plant

On the Gardeners World Special last night, 15th Jan, Deena from Kingsbridge in Devon had a gorgeous umbrella plant, can anybody tell me which variety it was?

@Claire.Bee If you are up and about at the moment the repeat programme is on BBC2. Maybe when the Umbrella plant is shown you could pause your tv and take a photo? Just a thought but maybe too late for you to be prepared. With the programme being repeats from last year I don't expect there would be so many on the forum who would have watched it. Someone may come up with an answer for you.
  • Thanks, I had it on record. There are so many similar umbrella plants, a few looked like it so I might just have to go pot luck.

It was Gardeners Special Winter recap ..no 2 .
At about 32 mins into the program.
The mystery plant was Cyperus...technically a sedge.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyperus

    Possibly Cyperus alternifolius.

I have only ever seen it growing in water.

    Quote from link see below.
    https://www.ourhouseplants.com/plants/umbrella-grass-cyperus

"Theoretically, Umbrella Grass is actually a pond or aquatic plant which resembles water reeds. It's very adapted to having its roots completely surrounded by water at all times and ultimately this is something that's needed if you want a good looking Cyperus. It grows just as well indoors as it does in a pond as long as you ensure the roots are kept constantly wet."

Although you must not underwater this plant at anytime, in all other ways Umbrella Grass is actually a very easy houseplant. It copes well with a range of light and temperature levels, grows quickly and is easily propagated. So if you become a fan it's very easy to grow more plants or give them away as unusual presents.

In some parts of the world the above traits have meant it's been classed as an invasive plant or weed, but on the whole and in the context of them being "houseplants" this is rarely a problem as they're neatly contained in pots.

  • Thats great thank you, I do have a tendency to over water so I think we would work quite well.

Watched the programme on Sunday and the lady who put the umbrella seed head in her vase, In the courtyard garden in Devon.
I noticed the vase I believe it to be by Wedgewood and designed by Keith Murray quite valuable, there would be a mark on the bottom.
I only saw it for 2 seconds, so sorry if I am wrong.

  • Yep you're correct @Joybell it's a Keith Murray so called football vase...wouldn't get much change from £400 for an immaculate example.

Thanks for letting me know it is a special vase, I think it is a beautiful shape and catches my eye every time I see one.

I was trying to let the gardener know how special it is.

Trouble is Deena from Kingsbridge, who was on the program and who owns the Cyperus plant and the vase, will not necessarily even follow these forums, let alone this thread.
