If I lop off part of a branch, will it sprout along the remaining branch or will the branch die off?
In London. Keen but lazy.

The problem with any fruit tree is that when you prune back branches you can often end up with water shoots and no fruit the following year.
The branch wont die off but it can send up those water shoots next year.
Interesting that there are many questions about figs on the forum late last year and now.
A great tree when it does what you wish for.

In not bothered about the fruit. Do water shoots have leaves?

Yes. They tend to grow very upright.
A silly question really but why have a fig tree when you aren't interested in the fruit?

I !like the shape and the foliage but I don't like figs. I don't want upright branches so I'll leave it alone.😊

Likewise I have it for foliage. It suits and hardy tropical look. Mix with bamboo, Paulownia, fatsia, tetrapanax and so on.
