Too late to prune lavender?

SophieKSophieK Posts: 244
I waited until my lavender stopped flowering, but it was quite late (in November), and I suspect I was a bit of a wuss and did not prune enough so should I go ahead and prune a bit more drastically or has that ship sailed?
Thank you for your advice

I just snip the flower stems.

A good hoeing is worth two waterings.

I prune in late winter, as much as I can (leaving less than an inch of green growth). Sometimes I do light deadheading earlier, just to tidy the plants. Lavenders here also flower for a long time.
  • We visited a garden in Suffolk last year & they had lavender that was 40 plus years old . They prune hard in late February just leaving the minimum green to regrow,  as long as you don't go into the brown it should be ok.

OK, so the light pruning I did last month is probably enough for now and I'll take your advice and wait till Feb/late winter for a more drastic chop. Thank you very much for your feedback everyone!
