Is now the right time?

To mulch roses? and to slow release feed roses?   If so should I mulch with leaf mould or well rotted manure (am on the right track?).  Also as I can't establish what an awful lot of my roses are as they were left by a previous owner, should I mulch if they are still flowering?  Thanks

Mulching now is fine and can be with well-rotted garden compost and/or manure or even just leaf mold or spent potting compost as they will be worked into the soil by worms and assorted micro-organisms and improve its health and structure.

Slow release fertilisers are best applied in spring when the plants are in active growth and hungry.  Occasional liquid feeds of rose or tomato feed will help them too as will a comfrey based "tea" which you can make yourself or buy but only apply these tonics between March and end of June or you'll get sappy growth which won't have time to harden well before winter.
