What fruit tree is this?

My parents have this tree in their garden which they thought they bought as a plum tree!
It has fruited this year but they definitely don’t look like plums! Can anyone identify the fruit? Perhaps it’s some sort of hybrid! Thanks

  • I think that’s a persimmon.

I thought ‘that’s an unripe persimmon’ too, @Dovefromabove, but the leaves look different to mine, which are in their autumn glory at the moment:

Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
  • It seems there are some quite different types @Nollie ... perhaps the leaves vary a bit https://leafyplace.com/types-of-persimmons/

Ah, that could be it @Dovefromabove. I’ve no idea what type mine is, I inherited it. I just know I don’t like the taste!

  • @Nollie 😊 From that article I’ve learned that some persimmons are for cooking and some are eating fresh.

I think that the ones I tried to eat many years ago must’ve been cooking ones 🥴🤢

Ripe Persimmons.  Maybe yours are another variety.
A good hoeing is worth two waterings.

  • The fruit is from Diospyros tree. There are several species.
