Re-potting lilies

I have Summer flowering lilies - Oriental and Tower - in pots.  I read somewhere that the bulbs don't like to be disturbed, so have left them in their pots, but, presumably, I will need to change the compost at some stage.  Is this something I should do now, or should I wait until Spring?

If you just remove the top layer - a couple of inches or so, and replace, that's ideal. I usually do it in spring, as that's when they'll get the benefit of it.
A bit of food as they die down is also helpful for building the bulbs up, especially as they're in pots, rather than the ground where they can access nutrients a bit more easily  :)
You'll find that you will need to lift and divide them at some point though. They multiply quite readily. After about 3 years, they might be quite congested, and won't be so productive  :)

  • Thank you @Fairygirl! I will follow your advice - should I use tomato feed? That's what I use to feed them during Summer.  The leaves are dying back so presumably I can do that now. Many thanks! :)

Almost any food is fine - just to give them a boost. You can do it a couple of times if you want until they're finished.  :)

  • Thanks again - I'll stick to tomato feed then - it's my usual 'go to' feed!  :)

Anything will do really - seaweed or B,F&B etc. It's just a general feed to help them along a bit.  :)
