Advice Please

Hi everyone I need some advice please. I recently purchased a Bay Tree, an Olive Tree and a Citrus Tree. I unfortunately  dont have a greenhouse, so would like to ask how I can protect them over the coming winter months?

Many Thanks

Olive trees are comparatively tough, l did find this thread about protecting olive trees which may be of some help.

Do you have a porch or anywhere similar?
The citrus might be a bit trickier

  • I keep my citrus tree in a pot indoors all year beside sunny patio doors. This is the second year I’ve had it and it’s doing well covered in limes still 🙂
I would soon something similar would be fine for an olive tree if you have the space.
  • Thank you Anni. I have an awning on the house, but wouldn't be leaving that extended over winter, so may be worth just bringing them in over winter..

The bay will be fine in a sheltered spot outside providing the pot is well drained and not allowed to go soggy. Raise it up on pot feet or battens.

I find the pot is in more danger of frost damage than my bay tree is. I wrap the pot in bubble wrap ... the tree is fine as long as it’s near the house and sheltered from the worst of the cold northeast winds.

  • Thank you for that advice, it's most helpful. I will certainly try that..I suppose it just depends on how hard the winter will be down here.🤔

I doubt if you’ll get the degree of cold that we in Norfolk get whistling across the North Sea to us from the Siberian Urals ... there’s nothing to stop it Brrr! 🥶  ❄️ ⛄️ ☕️

My bay tree stays all year in a NW corner formed by two house walls. It is happy with life.
