The usual thinking is to wait until they've been hit by frost and the foliage has turned black. I've found though that if you wait until then it's more difficult to dry them out. A couple that l really want to keep were lifted a week or so ago and are drying out in the greenhouse.
A bit more information here that may help  :)

  • Thank you AnniD
  • I have been thinking about this too - my Dahlias are still flowering really well and I'm still cutting the flowers for the house, so am loathe to dig them all up.  I have decided to dig some up and risk leaving some in the ground and mulching them when the frosts really kick in - this is a first for me, I've always lifted them before, but our garden is quite sheltered so I'm giving it a go.  I have tried various different mixes for storing Dahlias and have found a mix of compost and perlite works best - didn't lose a single one last year, and I have a lot!!
  • Thank you Justflowers I think I will try to leave some in the ground as well. If we have a really cold winter it will be a test to see if I can leave them in situ for the future. Fingers crossed and thank you.
