The flower buds look more like thistle family.   I guess  it will flower soon.

Is it a weed though? Should one digging it up?

Well you've had it nearly two years. I'd wait until it flowers and then see.  One mans weed is another mans rare wildflower.  I'm really curious now as to what it is.

The flowers will soon be open.

Please can we see a pic taken to show how it is growing up.

I hate to say that the nearest I can get it Cirsium heterophylla...common name melancholy thistle.
I can see the leaves are white /silver on the backs.
    The veins look a match.

I just love to see these growing in the wild...quite beautiful.

I think you're about right silver surfer. If it was a teasel it would have flowered last year and not spread vegetatively.

Silver surfer I think that is it! I will post another pic when the flower blooms. Thank you. I just don't want it to totally take over because I only have a small flower bed

There are some fancy cirsiums that Crocus etc charge silly prices for.    Cirsium heterophyllum pink blush looks a stunner.

I'd go with teasel. Our neighbour planted/sowed seeds to feed the birds/bees in some waste ground behind us and now they are coming up in my garden.
    Teasel is not the answer.
Just for ref this is Dipsacus fullonum...common teasel.

    Leaves in pairs.
    Stem is prickly.
Leaves underneath also have prickles on the midrib.
    Top of leaf warty.
