Transplant My Peony

Hi  I have a large 3ft Tall peony shrub. I need to transplant it from the front of the border to the back of the border. No more than 4ft. I watch too much Gardeners World and are re-arranging my borders !!!
Do you think it is OK to do it this weekend or should I wait until Spring.
What do you think.
It used to belong to my Dad and I dont want to lose it.

  • It sounds like a Tree Peony, in which case it can be moved as soon as it has gone dormant and has dropped all of its leaves (which shouldn't be long now.)  You may get away with doing it now if it has already started dropping leaves.  Dig the new hole first and then dig around the plant, taking as large a rootball as you can physically manage while trying not to damage any roots.  Plant at the same level and give it a couple of buckets of water to settle the soil around the roots.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Generally speaking,  now is a good time to move peonies,  weather permitting

Do you know which variety it is ?
  • Thank you.
Then weather permitting I know what I am doing this weekend.
