Banana Plants

Hi, I am after some advice for my banana plants. I know I have to bring protect but do they need to be kept in darkness over the winter.

    I put mine a my polytunnel over the winter and leave it to its own devices. not wrapped. 
    I've heard of people who stick theirs in the attic for the winter
