What hedging plant do you recommend?

Hi,

Im looking to plant thin long high hedging along this wall between the patio and wall. I was thinking planting the Laurel hedging here. Just concerned that the roots will invade the drainage pipe along the edge of the patio.

Thinking of putting metal sheets down to prevent roots invading the pipes under

Think you will have problems in such a narrow space. Laurel gets very bushy and you will have it expanding into the patio area in no time.
You do need at least 1m in width to grow anything well.
If the drainage is a pipe and not a channel roots will be fine, restricting them even more won't help your hedge.
Maybe a thin conifer would work or a tall grass

Very narrow for any kind of hedging to thrive, unless you do some very good prep and then aftercare.
Beech or Hornbeam can be kept narrow, but you'd need to do a fair bit of work on the soil to get it in decent shape first.
Yew can also be kept tight.
Laurel would grow, it'll grow almost anywhere, but you won't be able to keep it tight and narrow.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

The Laurel won't stay thin.  How about making a screen with trellis and planting a variety of climbers ?
There will be plenty of other suggestions so a matter of waiting to see if any appeal :)

The trellis and climbing plant sound a good idea. Thank you for your advice. Just thought Laurels can be thin but you're right.
