I am looking to buy a small 2' x 4' aluminium greenhouse in order to overwinter some of my young plants during their first few winters. Can anyone recommend some websites with decent prices and quality items please

  • I'd love to advise you but can't, sorry, but I have to say I think you mean 4' x 2'

I'd love to add a smiley emoji but I've no idea how!

:D:blush::D:smiley:Ooops, well spotted, thank you. I have corrected the title and the post. Not sure I would be able to fit anything in a 2"x4" greenhouse even if I managed to find one. Well, maybe some moss. :D:smiley:

PS: When you write a reply, you will see a line of various icons above the reply box, one of which is a smiley face. When you click on it you can see all the smileys. Click on one and bingo! Hope that helps. :)

It depends on your budget of course and whether you want safety glass etc. but there's a couple of examples here with differing prices. There's a long delivery date on the Hall's one, but other suppliers should be available.
If you can get to a garden centre or greenhouse display place, it's much better if you can see them "in the flesh" so to speak  :)

  • I have a larger simplicity, I took the green powder coating and thick glass options (wind and trees to worry about here). I bought it from Greenhouse People as well. Happy with the greenhouse and the service from them, although this was years ago. Sturdy construction and no issues, which is impressive because the wind comes straight off a field with little protection - the 70mph winds this week didn't even shake the greenhouse.

My only observation is that a couple of pieces of the trim that holds the smaller decorative glass panes in place were slightly short, so there's an inch or 2 gap between glass and frame. Not really a problem for me...

Funnily enough I was just looking at this one today because I have a 15% off code for the website.

I am not bothered about the green powder coating since I'm not in a coastal area so no issues with corrosion however I am quite glad to hear that it is sturdy since the wind in my garden comes straight off a field too. Although considering the narrow profile of this one I am thinking of placing it against a wall and shielded from wind.

May I ask: is it easy to put together and are the instructions clear enough?

Does the base need to be fastened to the ground?

If i went for the starter set would I be able to buy the bar capping separately?

  • It was "ok" to put together. As with all these things, if you're fit enough to lift panes of glass, fairly handy and have time and space, or have done it before, it's straight forward enough but still a decent amount of work.

The instructions are reasonable, but with the usual caveat of trying to distinguish near identical metal bars from each other! It comes in a LOT of pieces though. Took me over a day if I recall correctly. You could always pay an installer though, I seem to recall Greenhouse People have a list of approved ones they sent with the order.

It has fastening points inside to fix to the ground. I built a raised concrete base and lay pavers over the top and fixed it to that because of local conditions (wind, and a brook about 20 feet away so ground can get wet). Personally I wouldn't like to just sit a greenhouse on the ground or only use spikes, but I guess it depends on individual circumstances.

I can't answer the bar capping question, sorry. I have the capping, but I can't remember if I bought it separately or as part of a bundle. I only remember upgrading the glass.

    Hope that helps.

  • Greenhouse Direct seem to have a reasonable choice - may be worth a look before you actually decide ?

They dont seem to have anything smaller than 6' x 4' unfortuntely
