Rose roots

How deep do rose roots usually go? Reason I ask is that I was digging in my gardern - turns out the former owners had put a plastic membrane in (sheet of plastic which was not porous) and my roses roots were only 5 cm down from the surface - above the plastic membrane. I have now removed the memembrane - added compost, top soil and bark mulch - just wondered if the roses will be okay.
They have been there 20 year plus so I suppose they will. Picture before digging here
