Hedge planting

I've been asked to plant a hedge. Preferably an evergreen but not a yew as it's poisinous to animals. Would like something that is good for wildlife though and possibly a food source as well for wildlife please?
Thank you

  • Hawthorne isn't evergreen but would be a good one for providing food for wildlife and the thorns provide protected habitat for birds to nest in when they mature. Planted these with some hornbeam which hold their leaves in winter and posted a video clip of them here.
If you want something with no thorns then there are evergreen forms of cotoneaster that have berries that are good for birds and good flowers for pollinators as well.
