When can I remove a 1/2 inch diameter side shoot from an Olive Tree?

The tree mentioned in my post about the size of a pot for an olive tree has a side shoot growing out of the main trunk a few inches above the ground.  The side shoot is about 1/2 inch in diameter and is immediately below a point where the main trunk appears to have been damaged several years ago; the bark appears to be closing over the damage.
Is it OK to remove the side-shoot now (August) or should I wait until next spring?
I will also have to re-pot the tree soon because the existing wooden planter is falling to pieces.

  • My question was answered on the BBC Radio Solent "Kitchen garden" programme a few weeks ago.  I removed the side shoot and planted some pieces of it as cuttings.
