I thought I'd scared him to death

I was raking out dead leaves etc none too gently. Then I spotted this chap.
He sat there perfectly  still and unblinking for ages.  
And then he moved! Whew!

In London. Keen but lazy.

    It's rather scary when they are disturbed and then move as you think they are part of what you are gathering up. At least he repayed you with a good picture.

    I am petrified of frogs/toads. I dont know why. I remember last year, I was clearing out under my front hedge and one jumped out at me, sqeeling. I screamed and ran away towards the house. A few people came out to see if I was ok and thought it was quite amusing that it was my reaction to a frog. In my defense, he was a big frog 😂😂

    No wonder you didn't spot it, it's very well camouflaged.

    I went back to continue the war of attrition against the last acuba. Where had he decided to hide?  Right in the middle of the stump.
    I can see how the camouflage would be good in most cases, but keeping still after a predator has already spotted you doesn't seem like a sensible idea.

    Now forgive me but is that a frog or toad? I really struggle to decipher even though I know the differences between them but on their own I can't work it out.

    It's a toad. Couldn't give you the definitive explanation of the differences. All I know is they're bigger than frogs and live in the undergrowth.

    Toads are warty and rough skinned. Frogs aren't  :)
    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....



    I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
