Dioscorea Elephantipes health check

Hi, I am not very experienced with plants and I am very worried about my favourite one, so hoping that somebody can help. I have bought this Dioscorea Elephantipes (elephant's foot or Hottentot bread) in September 2019: it was growing well until January 2020 when it started to die back, and it has not shown any sign of activity since then. I have watered it a bit every few weeks. It might simply be dormant, but I am afraid that something might be wrong. It would be very helpful if someone can see if the roots and the plant look fine. Thanks!

  • Welcome to the forum.

This species goes dormant in summer. Mine went dormant in June and should start to grow again around the end of August, so yours should be dormant now, and does not need watering till its starts to regrow. According to my book they can go dormant in late winter so yours seems to be behaving according to the book. I think you just need to be patient, it should start growing in the next couple of months. I can't see anything obviously wrong with it.
  • Thanks Alan, this is really reassuring :) fingers crossed it will show some signs of life soon.
