I wish I could solve the problem of the hordes of ants that make a home for themselves in my compost bin. Any ideas?

Ants do not like citronellic acid so every time I have an orange I cut the peel up into tiny pieces and sprinkle it in vulnerable spots like the thyme bed and the kitchen door as they are attracted to sugar. Seems to work.

I haven't removed ants from my garden as I work on clay and keep hoping that they will loosen the soil, brown ants at one end of the garden quiet OK! but that ginger lot, visious little things and I approach with care.perhapes I should rescue some chickens.

Rescue chickens, a great thing to do , though I confess that ours were not rescued, I was hearing all about the process from someone recently, and although a harrowing experience when the birds first arrive (mostly with few feathers and unable to walk),it also sounds as if by doing it you not onlt help the hens themselves, but are also well rewarded by seeing how they are transformed!

In the spring l find ants starting to build a nest but with putting more kitchen wast in and paper cuttings from my shreder, it keeps them down but if l leave it for some time the nest gets larger. I have them elsewhere in the garden but l find they are no problem so lleave well alone.

Brilliant idea Pippa, I used to feed slugs to our hens when we had them, very satisifing to watch them gobble up a pest.
