Wildflower Meadow Creation

I am planning to create a wildflower-meadow-like area on the patch of grass at the front of our house - it’s size is approx 3mx2m.  Having read various articles and advice I am still unsure whether I can begin this process in September, or need to wait until March. Any recommendations would be appreciated.  ( I have already ordered seeds through wildseed.co.uk as recommended by Monty.). Thank you!

I think it depends on the species you're using. Some can be sown now, some will need to be sown in spring. I'd check the packet or website for more info.

Are you keeping the grass and mixing the seeds with it?

Is this a grass meadow or a patch of annuals?

    In the sticks near Peterborough
  • Emorsgate (wildseeds.co.uk) offer seeds for both perennial and annual meadows so, as the others say, it depends what you've gone for. Annual meadows are sown in spring on prepared (bare) soil and the plants usually start flowering 8-10 weeks after sowing.

Thank you all - I’ve ordered yellow rattle seeds and a special general purpose meadow mixture.  We will mow the grass very low and scarify the ground before sowing but keep some of the grass.

its a patch of grass between our fence line and the unmade road beyond.

We were out yesterday and passing fields owned by beeswax (Dyson hoovers) and they had sown the edges of their fields with wild flowers, it was a blaze of colour, beautiful.
