can anyone identify this please?

For a few years I have dug up this plant around a rose and fern. The leaves are alternate but I am really stuck. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you. I have attached a photo of the plant. The stems are solid. There a lot of small fibrous roots then a big tap root.

A sucker from a nearby tree?

I don't think so as we cut down the flowering cherry about 15 years ago and that was the nearest tree. Thank you for your suggestion though.

I agree with @fidgetbones ... those look like suckers from tree roots to me.  It could still be from the cherry, but if there are other trees in the area I would look suspiciously/accusingly  at them too ... tree roots can reach a long way ...

Thank you. The whole area is jam-pack full of plants and stuff seeds all over the place, a lot of it brought in by the birds.

Well fidgetbones and Dovefromabove looks as if you are right. We went down the garden and found 2 ornamental cherries that are very similar to the leaf structure that I posted. They are about 25 metres and 35 metres from where I have been digging out the 'invader'. Thank you so much. I've just spent about an hour looking through weed sites and you were right all along. o:)
