Ideas for large tubs for wedding.

I am planning large tubs to be planted for my son's wedding (May 8th 2021).  Colour theme is purple and white.  So far I have hesperis matronalis for centre of pots and vinca minor and ivy to trail over the sides. Allium purple sensation ordered for planting around the hesperis but I am struggling to find something softer to plant in between.  Wedding was due to be this June so my original plans are useless! Any ideas gratefully received.  Thank you.

  • Maybe some white alyssum to bring it all together and provide extra fragrance?

white nemesia near the front and some early white umbelliers might be lovely.

Purple and white tulips tho you'd be gambling on them cooperating and flowering at the right time.  Maybe grow some in individual pots and slot them in a day or two before?

Assuming they'll be sheltered before going out for the big day there are lots of white and purple and mixed petal forms of petunia tha would trail and you could try nepeta for softer lilac/purple flowers and foliage.

Hesperis matronalis comes in a white form as well as the lilac/purple.

Lobelia comes in purple/indigo and white.. and are tough and easy.  Green house grown for timing the flowers right.

  • What about heucheras? There's also a very pretty variegated honesty (Lunnaria annua variegata) that could work. Purple-leaved shrubs for height and structure? Silver could also work well and you're likely to be able to pick up some cineraria at the garden centre.
  • Thank you Rachel. Great ideas and the honesty will tick all their boxes in terms of colour scheme!
  • Thank you everybody.  What a great forum this is!  I will take all the ideas on board and source some seeds as waiting for plugs will be too late.  My greenhouse is unheated but I will try to force some lobelia, alyssum and nemesia to flower early (I have lots flowering now which was ready for the postponed June wedding!).  I will also grow much more than I need and as Obelixx suggested there will be scope to drop things in where there are gaps in the tubs.

Hope it goes well and that you post photos when they're ready.

  • Many thanks!  Fingers crossed as it will be so weather dependent - I will certainly post some photos if they are a success.
