Leaf cutter bees

Bit of a forum hog today sry.

The leaf cutter bee that took up residence in a drill hole in the pergola must have finished her work as the top is now sealed with a lovely pink coloured petal or leaf. Nice work.

Meanwhile, I noticed that another bee has been going in and out of a large bamboo cane that's supporting my tomatoes. Could be the same one. I assume they have more than one egg laying session. Or is that wrong?

  • They only lay one egg at a time, and in many holes, so it could be the same one.

    Thanks @Alan Clark2 in Liverpool
I had thought that they laid a series of eggs separated by leaves that they cut but I must be confusing them with Mason bees or something else.
  • That is correct, but there is only one egg per compartment, and only a limited number of compartments can fit in a typical hole.

I have a home made bee hotel and had the privilege this Spring to watch a LC bee make deliveries to the hole it had chosen in the wooden block I had supplied.

    Most humbling.
