I know it's probably a risk but if I was to move a Penstemon in full flower, how would you suggest I go about it? I've tried taking cuttings several times to no avail, so just want to dig it out and move it to my new garden.

Water it well so its root ball is soaked.  Then lift it all out and pot it up in good soil based compost and water again.  I would cut back the flower stems so the plant concentrates on roots and foliage for a while.

Thanks for that Obelixx, good advice!
Last year I did what Obelixx recommends above and all was fine.  The plant soon put out more flowering shoots.
