Weed Identification

Good Afternoon 👩🏼‍🌾 can any of you help me identify this weed please?  I’ve recently moved to a new property and have noticed shoots that keep coming up in my lawn.  I started digging them out and the roots are huge!

    Hi @hayleygolder and welcome 😊

Those look like suckers from some tree roots ... any trees nearby?

  • Hi @Dovefromabove and thank you ☺️.  There was a small tree when I moved in.  Someone thought it may have been a plumb tree.  We removed it.  These are in the same area as that tree but also a good few metres away too.  Can trees spread that far?

Oh yes the roots spread quite a way  ... and if the tree has been cut down the roots will be trying to survive by triggering the growth of new trees. Prunus (which includes plums) are particularly prone to doing this.

The good news is that if you keep mowing the lawn regularly they’ll eventually give up.

    😊
