Couch grass - Am I wasting my time?

Hi, I've realised all the tuffs in my lawn are couch grass.  After reading through many discussions on here and other forums, it seems the only real option is to dig it our an re-turf.  My question is, I suspect this has arrived via my neighbour's jungle, in which case, I'm guessing it would just return.  Am I right, do I just put up with it?  It is green after all!

    Yes. But then I have a green patch of grass and low growing weeds( wildflowers) rather than a lawn. I prefer it.
    In London. Keen but lazy.

    In theory if you keep the lawn well fed watered & closely cut the couch will die out as unlike meadow grass it cannot cope with frequent mowing. Note I say in theory!
