Bugs on hydrangea

Does anyone know what these bugs are and how to deal with them? I’m pretty sure they were involved in the demise of my hydrangea buds in the brocolli stage

Shield bugs - there are loads of types.
Unlikely to have bothered the flower buds though if the hydrangea was healthy. That's more likely to be lack of water at the optimum time.

Fab, thank you very much! Yes they were also neglected during a dry period.

That certainly won't have helped them. I could see damage on foliage.

Many people try to grow them in pots, and they rarely thrive. If that's the case with yours, they'll need a lot of attention. If they're in the ground, just pick off any damaged leaves as they die back and make sure they get enough hydration in long dry spells.
A good mulch of bark after serious watering helps too.  :)
