Holes in tree

Hi 👋, I have noticed this morning that something has created holes in our tree. It looks like the bark has been chipped / scratched away as well so I’m thinking possibly a squirrel or something but I wondered if anyone had any ideas? I thought I’d best check in case it’s more likely to be something else and I need to get it treated. Thanks so much for your help, I’m very much new to all this (especially trees!)

If those are LED fairylights, that would make the holes about 15mm or so in diameter?  If so, then it could be a woodpecker extracting insects such as beetle larvae which have burrowed inside the tree (borers.)
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

    My thought too @BobTheGardener ... woodpeckers. 😊

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

  • Yes that’s right they are about that size. Thank you both very much. I hadn’t even considered woodpeckers!

I’ll look into them to see if there is anything I need to do or if it’s all ok as it is. Thanks so much again!
