pondplants in pond substrate or aquatic soil

Dear all,

I've made a wildlife pond 2 weeks ago, and have put most waterplants in baskets with pond substrate for now. I will revise the baskets later. I've removed most potting soil from the roots and put them directly in pond substrate in order not to introduce too many nutrients in the water. I do wonder if I should have left the aquatic soil (clayish) with the shining pondweed?

What is your experience with planting pondplants bare-rooted in the substrate?
Which work and which really do need 'soil'?
