Apples - when to pick it?

at which point do I know my apples are ready to be picked? Should I wait until those are totally red?

They are ready to pick when a gentle twist and tug pulls them away from the branch. Some apples have red colouration, some don’t. It would be unusual for apples to be ripe before September.

It all depends on variety. You can find apples which ripen every month from July to November. Location will also be a factor.

when I was a young student, a million years ago, I was told at East Malling Research Station, that you know it's ripe when it come away with a lift like lifting a cup off a hook.
