Is this terminal or solvable ?

It may be a nutrient deficiency.   Clematis are hungry, thirsty plants and that particular variety will need far more than can be provided in that small pot.   Is there a reason it isn't planted in the soil?

There's also very little soil in the pot.
It won't be happy in there for long I'm afraid.

Thanks, it is in the pot for another month as the whole garden is going to be redesigned and that fence is going to be taken down and renewed. I have just added to the soil and found it very waterlogged down at the roots. If I feed it ( what with? ) will it survive another six weeks?

I wouldn't feed it if it's waterlogged. I'd address the reason for it being waterlogged instead. The pot is only half full of soil which doesn't help, but the drainage holes must be blocked.
It would be worth removing it and re potting properly.

Thank you so much for that reassurance. That is exactly what I did yesterday , but now unsure how to manage the watering with the current range of weather. How do I judge it ?

Assuming you fix the drainage problem, put the pot on feet which will also help excess water drain and then use your finger.  Poke it in the top of the compost and if it feels dry, water.   As for feed, there are specialist clematis fertilisers available but those formulated for roses or tomatoes will do too.

Looks like phosphorus deficiency. If you can sort out the waterlogging and get the soil to a normal moisture then some bone meal should address this. Had similar with one of my clematis in a pot.
