My apple tree seems unwell ....

Hi! I planted an apple tree in my garden about six years ago but it’s never seemed to be happy. The leaves are always curled up and there are spots on some of them. Does anyone know what might be wrong with it?

    It looks like apple scab.

    See here for more info

Not much you can do to eradicate it. Your best bet is to make the tree less congested in the centre so that more air can circulate through it.

Cut out any branches that cross over the middle of the tree to make it more of a goblet shape.

But don’t do too many branches - a few this year and a few next is better than if you hack away at lots of branches in one go.

So if you remove, say, six branches now and six next summer you will eventually improve the air circulation and lessen the amount of scab.
Apophthegm -  a big word for a small thought.
If you live in Derbyshire, as I do.
