Giant Scabious malformed

I have had a giant scabious for two years. It has only reached three feet with only a few stems. This year the main stem flower head looks like this. Any ideas what’s happened or what I should do to help it grow correctly? Thank you.

ah thank you. I’ve had a daisy with that before but didn’t realise it related to stems growing from the flower too. It’s alien like and strangely beautiful at the same time.
