What's happened to my potatoes?

I have planted 10 seed potatoes (Early's) in a bed that had strawberries in for years. We have just dug some up as they have all grown well and flowers have finished. 
Found a few small but mainly large sized potatoes with craters in them and rough skin? The only other thing I noticed is some red ants? Would they do this to potatoes? Thanks. Jo

It looks like they may have split. Usual culprit is uneven watering. It can happen particularly after dry periods followed by heavy rain, which many of us will have experienced recently.
