Lavender plants - what to do?

We have just bought 12 lavender plants (Hidcote variety each in circa 15 cm pots) to replace a row of very old lavender plants. We don't want to dig up the old plants at this time (they are about to flower and attract an abundance of pollinating bees)... how should we look after the plants we bought? Should we leave them in their current pots or put (heel) them in to the ground with a view to putting them in their final position at the end of the season?

I would leave them in the pots and keep watering through the summer and plant them in the autumn.
